I had a fantastic lunch at the Lohninger restaurant end of November. The restaurant combines the authentic charm of Austrian cuisine with modern, international influences. Lohninger is a family-run restaurant founded in 2010 by chef Mario Lohninger. The restaurant is located in a beautiful old building near the Museumsufer, with high ceilings, elegant furniture, and a cozy atmosphere. The menu offers a variety of dishes, from classics like Wiener Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn to more exotic options like grilled miso salmon served with shiitake mushroom, ginger, and orange broth, and watercress salad. The wine list features a selection of Austrian and German wines as well as international choices.
You can select between a set lunch menu and a selection of Austrian or international dishes. I decided to for the set menu and started off with a glass of champagne (Billecart – Salmon Brut), which was a perfect combination with the amuse bouche. For the main course I went with recommended wine pairing, a Sauvignon Blanc Kalk + Kreide 2022 from the Tement winery (Steiermark).
The Menu
Organic baby carrots, mascarpone, lamb's lettuce, styrian pumpkin seeds, orange and honey dressing
Breton monkfish, caramelized black salsify, capers, red cabbage jus, and potato mesh
The monkfish was perfectly braised and came with an excellent combination of creamy mashed potatoes and caramelized salsify combined with the acidity of the capers. Just perfect!
Carnaroli rice pudding, tangerine sorbet, wasabi meringue
Resume
Mario Lohninger and his team have lived up to my expectations, and the Lohninger is definitely one of the best restaurants in Frankfurt. I can highly recommend it. If you are in town, then check it out. You will not be disappointed.
